Both Alcorn Tennis Teams Post Winning Records at Second SWAC Round-Up

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – A successful weekend for the Alcorn State University tennis programs saw the women's team finish 3-1 overall and the men 2-1 at the second SWAC Round-Up tournament on the campus of Alabama State University.
 
The Lady Braves (7-12, 5-3 SWAC) defeated Grambling State 4-1, Arkansas-Pine Bluff 4-0 and Prairie View A&M 4-3. Their only loss came to the host institution ASU 4-0.
 
The Braves (6-16, 4-2 SWAC) dropped their opener Friday at ASU 4-2, but responded with a 4-1 victory over UAPB and 4-0 over PVAMU.
 
For the women, freshmen Daria Chemodanova and Anastasia Vaganova both improved their SWAC records to 5-1 in singles. Vaganova was 2-0 over the weekend and two of her matches went unfinished.
 
Chemodanova came through with the biggest win of the weekend in the team's final match. With the team score tied 3-3 against PVAMU, she pulled through with a comeback 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 1 singles to give the Lady Braves the decisive match.
 
On the men's side, junior Kert Kilumets continued to roll as he stayed undefeated, 5-0 in conference. He moved up to No. 1 singles where he went 2-0 with an unfinished match.
 
In Alcorn's contest against UAPB, the Braves dropped the doubles point but quickly came back to sweep four singles matches to win 4-1.
 
Senior Nischay Rawal tallied a 3-0 weekend at No. 4 singles. He too is unbeaten in singles play in conference.
 
The Lady Braves will be back in action Tuesday when they host Louisiana Tech at 2 p.m. in Vicksburg, Mississippi. Both Alcorn teams will travel to Nicholls State on Thursday for a 2 p.m. start. The 2017 SWAC Championships will be held April 14-16 in New Orleans.
