Alcorn Completes Mid-Week Matches

THIBODAUX, La. – The Alcorn State University tennis programs were in action this week as the women fell 7-0 Tuesday to Louisiana Tech at Halls Ferry Courts in Vicksburg, while the men dropped a 5-2 decision at Nicholls State on Wednesday at the Colonel Tennis Complex.
 
Senior Kert Kilumets stayed hot for the Braves (6-17, 4-2 SWAC) as he posted a straight set win at No. 1 singles. He defeated Sam Meessen from Nicholls (5-7) 6-3, 6-3. Kilumets improved to 3-2 at No. 1 singles and is also 8-2 at No. 2 singles. It was his third consecutive win as he went unbeaten at the SWAC Round-Up last weekend and is 5-0 in conference.
 
Alcorn also picked up a victory at No. 6 singles. Sophomore Nuno Rocha came back for a 4-6, 7-6, 11-9 win over Cornelius Schramm.
 
At the No. 4 position, senior Nischay Rawal split sets but was edged out in a third-set super tiebreaker 10-7.
 
Despite getting swept, the Lady Braves (7-13, 5-3 SWAC) put up a fight in several singles matches. Sophomore Bianca Birkenstock split sets at the No. 2 spot, but the super tiebreaker just didn't end in her favor 10-6. Junior Natalia Parchowska saw a similar result as she dropped a nail-biter 11-9 in the super tiebreaker.
 
The men's team will return to the courts Sunday when they face the University of the Ozarks at 2 p.m. on a neutral court in Jackson, Mississippi. Both the men and women will host Delta State on Wednesday, March 29 in Vicksburg, Mississippi at Halls Ferry Courts.
