PINE BLUFF, Ark. - The Alcorn State University softball squad hopes to improve on its flawless SWAC record when it travels to the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff, beginning a three-game series Thursday on a 2 p.m. first pitch at the Torii Hunter Softball Complex.
The remaining two games will feature a 1 p.m. doubleheader Friday.
The Lady Braves (6-19, 3-0 SWAC) dropped two competitive contests to Southeastern Louisiana University Tuesday by the scores of 2-0 and 6-1.
Alcorn's pitching staff allowed just five hits in the first game and its defense committed no errors.
Junior outfielder Mariah Ortiz, shortly after being named the SWAC Softball Hitter of the Week, extended her hitting streak to 10 games on a leadoff single up the middle.
Junior Jessica Crum remains in the top-30 of Division I with an .862 slugging percentage (21st) and .462 batting average (27th).
Crum has a team-high seven multiple-RBI outings and matches fellow junior Taylor Hughes for the most multiple-hit contests with nine. She also fronts the squad with six homers and 29 RBIs.
UAPB (5-18, 0-3 SWAC) was swept 8-3, 8-0 and 12-4 by Alabama State in its conference-opening series.
The Lady Lions roster features Preseason All-SWAC First Team outfielder Tonnay Hawkins who leads the squad with a .400 batting average. Senior catcher Paige Garcia has lifted UAPB offensively with a team-high five homers and 21 RBIs.
