Lady Braves Top UAPB 6-4 in Series Opener

PINE BLUFF, Ark. – The Alcorn State University softball squad improved its SWAC record to 4-0 Thursday with a 6-4 victory over the University of Arkansas – Pine Bluff at the Torii Hunter Softball Complex.

Senior shortstop Sametria Collins and junior first baseman Taylor Hughes each recorded two hits. Junior catcher Jessica Crum posted three RBIs on her seventh homer of the season.

Junior Robin Harrison (3-4) earned the win as she tossed her seventh complete game of the season. The Vancouver B.C., Canada native struck out seven and has fanned 22 hitters between her last three starts.

Lady Lions (5-18, 0-4 SWAC) starter Angeli Ramos (2-6) took the loss, allowing six runs (five earned) on five hits. She also struck out and walked three during the 115-pitch complete-game outing.

UAPB's first two hitters in the lineup, Tonnay Hawkins and Ta'Lyn Moody notched two hits apiece.

Hughes plated junior outfielder Mariah Ortiz in the first inning on a single up the middle to put the Lady Braves (7-19, 4-0 SWAC) ahead 1-0.

Harrison sat down Mari Aguilar on strikes in the bottom-half of the first inning with the bases loaded to escape unscathed.

Collins hit a sacrifice fly to left field in the top of the second inning, scoring senior outfielder Madison Chitwood. Hughes followed with another single that brought home senior outfielder Adriana Gutierrez. Alcorn held a 3-0 advantage after the first inning and a half.

The Lady Lions tallied a run in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI single from Moody.

The Lady Braves responded with a two-out rally in the fourth inning. Collins tripled down the left-field line, and Hughes was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and third. Crum then cleared the bases to provide Alcorn with three pivotal insurance runs.

After UAPB countered with three runs of its own in the bottom of the fifth inning, Harrison forced the Lady Lions into a double play in the sixth and struck out Shanic Akins, the potential go-ahead run, looking to seal the victory in the seventh.

The Lady Braves will conclude the series with UAPB tomorrow in a doubleheader commencing at noon.
