Alcorn Hosts Delta State in Vicksburg Wednesday

VICKSBURG, Miss. – After a week off from competition, the Alcorn State University men's and women's tennis programs will return to the courts Wednesday when they host Delta State at 2 p.m. at Halls Ferry Road Courts.

It's a rematch for the Braves (6-17, 4-2 SWAC) who defeated DSU (5-7) in the first meeting this year 5-4 on the road on Feb. 8. Alcorn won two of the three doubles matches before the team's split in singles 3-3.

Alcorn's top tandem of junior Kert Kilumets and senior Nikita Kostikov won both of their matches. They teamed up for an 8-4 victory at No. 1 doubles. Kostikov then posted a 6-7 (4), 6-3, 4-3 (retired) win at No. 1 singles, while Kilumets cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 victory at the No. 2 spot.

Kilumets has won three singles matches in a row. He's 8-2 at No. 2 singles and 3-2 at the No. 1 position. Kilumets is also 5-0 against the SWAC.

Sophomore Nuno Rocha has also been hot as of late and has won back-to-back matches. He's played primarily at No. 5 and 6 singles.

The Lady Braves (7-13, 5-3 SWAC) and DSU (5-11) will meet for the first time this year. Alcorn has won two of its last three matches including a 4-0 sweep over Arkansas-Pine Bluff and a 4-3 decision over Prairie View A&M.

Both freshmen Daria Chemodanova and Anastasia Vaganova carry 5-1 singles records against conference opponents. Vaganova is 8-3 overall at No. 5 and 6 singles.

Wednesday marks the final home match of the year for both Alcorn squads. The 2017 SWAC Tennis Championships is set for April 14-16 in New Orleans.
