LORMAN, Miss. - The Alcorn State University softball program welcomes Jackson State University for a three-game series beginning Friday at 3 p.m. at the Alcorn Softball Complex.
The final two contests will take place in a doubleheader Saturday on a 1 p.m. first pitch.
Alcorn (7-23, 4-2 SWAC) most recently dropped two games in a doubleheader at Lamar. The Lady Braves tested the Cardinals in the opener, holding a 7-2 lead after five and a half innings before falling 8-7 on a walk-off hit.Â
Junior first baseman Taylor Hughes earned three hits in that contest, marking her 13th multiple-hit game this season. The Phoenix, Arizona, native fronts the SWAC with 39 hits. She also spearheads the squad with a .550 batting average in conference play.
Junior Jessica Crum drove in Alcorn's only run in the second game on a two-out double to center field. She leads the league with 36 RBIs and 68 total bases. Crum also boasts a 13-game reached base streak, matching the longest by a Lady Brave this season. Senior infielder Sametria Collins also achieved the feat in the first 13 games this season.
Junior Robin Harrison has compiled a 2-0 record in the circle complemented by a 1.75 ERA against SWAC opponents. She hurled complete games and totaled 14 strikeouts in 12 innings pitched between the two outings.
Freshman Ambria Dorsey has yet to allow a run in a conference setting. In two relief outings of 4.2 innings, she allowed two hits and struck out four.
In SWAC play, Alcorn has outscored opponents 37-23 including a 5-0 advantage in the sixth inning and 4-0 edge in the first.
JSU (9-23, 2-4 SWAC) fell 21-5 to Southern Miss Wednesday. Lady Tigers shortstop Denisha Knight has a team-high five homers and 27 RBIs. JSU second baseman Victoria Nelson enters the series with the team's highest batting average at .435.
The Lady Braves split two games with the Lady Tigers in Jackson last season. The third game was called due to severe weather and ruled a no contest.
