LORMAN, Miss. - Junior Robin Harrison tossed a complete-game shutout as the Alcorn State University softball program blanked Jackson State University 5-0 Friday afternoon at the Alcorn Softball Complex.
The contest marked Harrison's first career shutout with the Lady Braves and the team's third of the season.
The lefty from Vancouver B.C., Canada needed just 90 pitches to go the distance. She struck out four and scattered three hits during her masterful performance. The three hits she allowed marks the lowest in a game by a Lady Braves pitcher this season.
Alcorn (8-23, 5-2 SWAC) jumped on JSU (9-24, 2-5 SWAC) early, tallying two runs in the bottom of the first inning.Â
After senior leadoff hitter Sametria Collins singled to left field and stole second, junior outfielder Mariah Ortiz walked to put runners on first and second with none out.
Junior first baseman Taylor Hughes then hit a single up the middle to score Collins and advance Ortiz to third. Ortiz would later score on a wild pitch.
Harrison allowed just one hit through the first two and a half innings. The Lady Braves struck again for three runs in the bottom of the third inning.
Harrison helped her own cause as she singled to right center with two outs to score Hughes who had been hit by a pitch earlier in the frame.
Junior infielder Bre Glenn then placed a perfect bunt right in front of Lady Tigers third baseman Chris Johnson to score senior outfielder Madison Chitwood. Fellow senior outfielder Adriana Gutierrez then hit a single that plated Harrison to put Alcorn ahead 5-0.Â
Harrison needed no additional insurance, however, as she retired 12 of the final 14 batters she faced.Â
Collins extended her hitting streak to six games as she notched multiple base knocks for the ninth time this season.Â
The series will conclude Saturday in a twinbill beginning at 1 p.m. CT.
