Alcorn Concludes Regular Season at William Carey

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – In their final matches before the SWAC Championships, the Alcorn State University tennis programs will travel to William Carey for a pair of 2 p.m. matches Tuesday.

It will be tough tune-up matches for Alcorn as both the WCU men's and women's teams have already locked up the SSAC regular season titles. The men are 11-4 overall and 8-0 in conference, while the women are 12-2 overall and 9-1 SSAC.

The Braves (7-19, 4-2 SWAC) will look to bounce back from a pair of defeats at No. 34 Ole Miss. Despite getting swept in a doubleheader, Alcorn was hanging tough in a few unfinished matches.

Junior Kert Kilumets has led the way for the Braves this season with a 12-8 overall singles record including a 4-4 mark at the top spot and 8-2 at the No. 2 position. He was a perfect 5-0 in SWAC play.

In doubles, the team of senior Nischay Rawal and sophomore Nuno Rocha will look to finish the year with a winning record. They are 9-8 together and were 4-1 in conference. The duo have played mainly at the No. 2 slot.

The Lady Braves (8-15, 5-3 SWAC) have shown their depth with winning records at No. 5 and 6 singles spots. Freshman Anastasia Vaganova is 10-6 on the year and 8-3 at No. 5 singles. She posted a 5-1 record in conference. Sophomore Marlene Maier is 8-5 overall, 6-2 at No. 6 singles and 4-0 in conference.

The women's program has mixed around its doubles teams all season with 10 different duos playing together. They've been strongest at No. 2 doubles with a 9-8 record, including an 8-4 mark by the team of Vaganova and sophomore Bianca Birkenstock.

The 2017 SWAC Championships is slated for April 14-16 at the Pepsi Tennis Center in New Orleans.
