Surging Lady Braves Carry Winning-Streak into AAMU

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Riding a six-game winning-streak, the Alcorn State University softball program will play its final non-conference road games this weekend in a three-game set at Alabama A&M at Bulldog Field.
 
Game one between the first-place Lady Braves (13-23, 10-2 SWAC) and the Bulldogs (12-23, 5-6 SWAC) is scheduled for 3 p.m. Friday. The teams will play a doubleheader Saturday beginning at noon which will be streamed on the SWAC Digital Network.
 
Alcorn leads the SWAC East Division by four games over Alabama State. The Lady Braves are 4.5 games in front of AAMU.
 
Alcorn is coming off back-to-back sweeps over Jackson State and ASU. Alcorn outscored the Lady Tigers 20-4 and the Hornets 25-6. Three of the six games during the streak went five innings. The Lady Braves did not commit an error in the field in the three matches against ASU.
 
Junior right-hander Madi Creed has allowed just one run in her last two starts. She's struck out nine in 10.0 innings and picked up a pair of wins.
 
Over the last six games, junior Taylor Hughes is 10-for-18 (.556) from the plate with four walks. She's on an 11-game on-base streak and a six-game hitting streak. Hughes leads the team with 16 multi-hit games on the year.
 
Hughes is one of two Lady Braves hitting over .400 on the season with a team-high .434 batting average. Junior Jessica Crum is hitting for a .406 mark with nine homers, 45 RBI and a .792 slugging. Both Hughes and Crum rank top-five in the SWAC in batting average. Crum leads the league in RBI. Hughes is hitting for a .568 average in conference. 
 
Junior Mariah Ortiz is all over the SWAC rankings. She is second in runs scored (33), fourth in triples (3) and fourth in walks (14). She's hitting for a .324 average and .421 on-base percentage on the season, and a .395 average and .511 on-base percentage in conference.
 
Junior Robin Harrison and freshman pitcher Ambria Dorsey has been unhittable in conference. Harrison has a 1.62 ERA and Dorsey 1.68. The two combine for a perfect 6-0 record. Dorsey has allowed just two walks in 16.2 innings of work.
 
In SWAC play, Alcorn has outscored the opposition 82-33. The Lady Braves have a 2.04 team ERA. They've seen their starting pitcher toss a complete-game in nine of the 12 contests with three shutouts.
 
The Bulldogs took two out of three from Mississippi Valley State last weekend on the road. Pitcher Caitlyn Hayden has thrown 102.0 innings for AAMU and has a 7-11 record and 4.94 ERA.
