Lady Braves Sweep Grambling 4-0 to Begin SWAC Championships

NEW ORLEANS – The quest to defend its title started Friday morning for the Alcorn State University women's tennis program as it blanked Grambling 4-0 in the quarterfinals of the 2017 SWAC Championships at the Pepsi Tennis Center.
 
The fourth-seeded Lady Braves cruised to a trio of straight-set singles victories over the sixth-seeded Lady Tigers. Freshman Daria Chemodanova breezed to a 6-0, 6-1 win at the No. 1 spot over Tanya Manguje.
 
Freshman Anastasia Vaganova, the 2017 SWAC Freshman of the Year winner, followed with a 6-2, 6-2 decision at No. 5 singles. The Lady Braves closed it out with a 6-2, 6-3 win from sophomore Marlene Maier at the No. 6 position.
 
Alcorn scored the first point of the match after winning two of the three doubles contests. Chemodanova teamed with junior Natalia Parchowska to dominate Manguje and Danna Galeano 6-0 at No. 1 doubles.
 
After the Lady Tigers won at No. 2 doubles, it came down to the No. 3 spot which was knotted 5-5. The Alcorn team of Maier and freshman Veronika Pytlikova won the final two games to pull out a 7-5 decision and clinch the point.
 
Chemodanova lost just one game on the day combining her singles and doubles scores.
 
Sophomore Bianca Birkenstock was ahead 6-4, 3-1 at No. 3 singles when the Lady Braves clinched.
 
Alcorn will face top-seeded Alabama State in the semifinals at 9 a.m. Saturday. The winner will advance to the championship on Sunday at 9 a.m.
