Racioppa Wins SWAC Championships, Forshey Named Co-Coach of the Year

ALEXANDRIA, La. – Junior Daniel Racioppa became the first-ever golfer from Alcorn State University to win the 2017 SWAC Championships and advance to NCAA Regionals. He did it over three days at the Oak Wing Golf Club.
 
"Words can't explain how happy and proud I am for Daniel Racioppa, he is a PGA tour level player," said Alcorn head coach Danny Forshey. "He made history today for our golf program and our university. His work ethic is second to none and it's an absolute pleasure to coach him."
 
Racioppa entered the final day three strokes out of first-place behind Kirabo Reed from Alabama State. He shot a 73 in the last round to top Reed's 77 and win by one stroke. Racioppa ended with a 217 (+1) for the tournament.
 
"When the pressure was at its height today, he was calm and delivered the perfect shots," Forshey said."
 
Forshey was named the SWAC Co-Coach of the Year. Racioppa was tabbed to the All-Conference First-Team, and freshman Spencer Rhodes was selected to the All-Conference Second-Team.
 
"Spencer and the rest of our team have improved all season and I'm very proud of them. I'm very excited for the future of our golf program," Forshey said.
 
As a team, the Braves finished in third-place.
 
Rhodes posted a top-10 showing with a 228 (+12). He carded a 74 on day one and followed it up with back-to-back 77's.
 
Alcorn also garnered a pair of top-15 finishes from junior Jon Allen and Daniel Stamper. Allen registered a 231 (+15), while Stamper recorded a 235 (+19).
 
Racioppa will compete at NCAA Regionals on May 15-17. There are six different locations for NCAA Regionals, and his site is still to be announced.
