LORMAN, Miss. – Despite out-hitting Mississippi Valley State, the SWAC East Division champion Alcorn State University softball program fell 4-2 Friday at the Alcorn Softball Complex.

The Lady Braves (15-26, 12-4 SWAC) led the Delta Devilettes (11-28, 6-7 SWAC) 2-0 heading into the sixth inning when MVSU had runners on first and second with one out. A hit up the middle resulted in a play at the plate, and after the runner was called safe, a throwing error into left field trying to get the trail runner at third resulted in all three runners scoring.

Alcorn, which outhit MVSU 10-8, had one last chance in the bottom of the seventh after putting a pair of runners on with one out. However, a sharply hit ball at the shortstop was caught and the runner at second was doubled up to end the game.

Senior
Sametria Collins, the reigning SWAC Hitter of the Week winner, notched a pair of hits along with senior
Courtenay Holt. It was Collins' 12th multi-hit game of the year and Holt's second.

Junior
Taylor Hughes notched both a hit and a walk in the contest to extend her on-base streak to 16 games.

The Lady Braves got on the board in the third inning. It came on an RBI single by junior
Robin Harrison. It scored senior
Montana Holyfield who had reached on a walk and advanced on a fielder's choice.

Alcorn made it 2-0 in the fifth on an RBI double to left field by Holt. It plated Holyfield who reached on a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore
Victoria Tyler.

Harrison got the start in the circle and struck out five in 5.2 innings. Freshman
Ambria Dorsey threw the final 1.1 frames without allowing a run.

Rebekah Clinton tossed a complete-game for MVSU and picked up the win. Kailyn Dunn led the team at the plate with three hits.

The Lady Braves have won eight of their last 10 conference games which included a six-game winning-streak.

Alcorn and MVSU will play a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m. to complete the series. Alcorn will honor its eight seniors
