Lady Braves Complete Regular Season at Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The SWAC East Division champion Alcorn State University softball program wrapped-up its regular season Tuesday as Memphis grabbed an 8-2 and a 9-1, five-inning decision as part of a doubleheader at the Tigers Softball Complex.

With a hit in the first game and a walk in the second, junior Taylor Hughes extended her on-base streak to 20 games. She drove in both runs for the Lady Braves (16-29, 13-5 SWAC) in game one on a two-out single up the middle in the third inning. It cut Alcorn's deficit to 5-2 at the time.

Senior Montana Holyfield laced a pair of singles to left field. It marked her seventh multi-hit game of the year. Senior Adriana Gutierrez also knocked a hit in the game in the third inning.

Junior Robin Harrison threw all six innings but was given the loss.

Christian Novak tossed a complete-game for the Tigers (25-23) to get the win. Lindsay Crowdus finished with three hits, three RBI and two runs to lead Memphis at the plate.

In game two, the Lady Braves trailed 2-0 when they got on the board in the fourth inning to cut the deficit in half. After junior Mariah Ortiz and Hughes both walked, Holyfield registered a hit to score Ortiz.

Though, Memphis was able to pull away with five in the bottom half, and walked-off with two more in the fifth to go up by eight.

Junior Madi Creed got the start and lasted 4.1 innings. Freshman Ambria Dorsey entered in the fifth in relief.

Molly Smith fired a complete-game for Memphis and Crowdus tallied three more hits at the plate with two runs and an RBI.

The Lady Braves will have the weekend off and will have two weeks to prepare for the 2017 SWAC Championships. The event is slated for May 10-13 in Montgomery, Alabama on the campus of Alabama State University. Alcorn will enter the tournament as the top seed from the east.
