Alcorn Excels at McNeese Spring Time Classic

LAKE CHARLES, La. – Making its second trip to McNeese State this season, the Alcorn State University track & field programs tallied five podium spots and numerous top-10 finishes Saturday against tough competition at the McNeese Track Complex.
 
Junior Dynasty Williams earned a medal in two different events. She was runner-up in the 3000m steeplechase with a 13:51.21. It was her first time competing in the event this year. Williams grabbed third-place in the 5000m with a season-best of 19:49.43. It was a huge improvement from her 20:22.33 set at Mississippi College on March 31.
 
Another bronze medal was handed out to the Lady Braves in distance running as sophomore Angelica Jacobs clocked in at 5:02.70 in the 1500m. She won her heat by over seven seconds.
 
Freshman Natalya McMillion turned in a big day as she set personal-records in two events. She sprinted for a third-place score of 57.14 in the 400m and placed 12th in the 200m with a 25.33. It upped her previous bests of 57.61 in the 400m at Texas Southern on March 18, and 25.62 in the 200m at Mississippi College.
 
In the women's 400m, freshman Tymesha Nabors darted for a time of 1:03.84. Freshman Candace Baity also finished top-10 in the event with a personal-record of 1:10.18.
 
A top-five performance came in the women's 100m where sophomore Jada Hunt registered a 12.04. Freshman Shameka Grover etched a personal-record of 12.14 to end in ninth and beat out her 12.27 set at Mississippi College.
 
On the men's side, freshman Anterious Brown led the way with a top-five mark of 48.90 in the 400m. He also submitted a top-10 score of 22.02 in the 200m which was a personal-record. It improved his 22.17 from Texas Southern.
 
Senior Marquis Prentiss scored a 56.20 in the 400m hurdles to place sixth, while freshman Jaylen Muhammed timed-in at 10.94 for a top-10 finish in the 100m.
 
Men's throws were highlighted by a pair of personal-records by freshman Tim Peoples. He launched a 37.65 in the discus and an 11.51m in the shot put. It topped his 31.30m in the discus at Mississippi College and his 10.08m in the shot put at that same meet. Junior Jordan Boyd also saw noticeable improvement as his 34.45m in the hammer crushed his 31.56m at Mississippi College.
 
Alcorn is scheduled to have a couple weekends off from competition before closing out the regular season at Northwestern State on Saturday, April 29. The 2017 SWAC Outdoor Championships is slated for May 5-7 in Huntsville, Alabama on the campus of Alabama A&M University.
