BATON ROUGE – Both the Alcorn State University men's and women's tennis programs will be in action this week, beginning with a 3 p.m. women's doubleheader at LSU on Wednesday at the LSU Tennis Complex.

On Thursday, both the Braves (0-2) and Lady Braves (0-1) will head to the University of New Orleans for a 3 p.m. start at the University Tennis Center against UNO.

The women's team will close out the week Saturday at Southeastern Louisiana with a noon serve at the Southeastern Tennis Complex.

The Lady Braves had a week off from competition after opening the season at West Alabama on Jan. 23. The meet was highlighted by a victory at No. 6 singles by junior
Marlene Maier who posted a 6-4, 6-4 win. Alcorn dropped the overall match 6-1, but came up on the wrong end of a series of tiebreakers that were played in lieu of a third set.

The men's team has also had time off from play after their scheduled matches last weekend got rained out. The Braves were supposed to take on Florida A&M and Southern Miss on Saturday but were called off. Alcorn fell to Ole Miss in a doubleheader on Jan. 21 to open the season.

LSU is off to a 3-1 start with wins over Northwestern State 7-0, Southern 4-0 and Fresno State 4-1. Its only loss was a 4-3 decision against Washington on a neutral court in Durham, North Carolina. LSU was 15-11 overall last year.

The UNO men are 0-1 with a 4-0 defeat to Miami, while the women are 1-2 with a 6-1 win against Flagler, but a 4-0 loss at Tulane and 6-1 vs. North Florida. The UNO men were 7-13 overall and 2-3 in the Southland last season, while the women were 15-9, 6-5 SLC.

SLU dropped a tight 4-3 match at UL-Lafayette in its only match this year. The Lady Lions were 3-16, 0-11 SLC a year ago.

The Lady Braves beat SLU 5-2 last season.
