Alcorn Women Place Eighth, Men Ninth at 2018 SWAC Championships

CLINTON, Miss. – Five of the 11 Alcorn State University cross country student-athletes registered personal-records as the Lady Braves took eighth-place and the Braves ninth at the 2018 SWAC Championships at Choctaw Trails on a cold Monday morning.
 
Personal-records were posted by freshman Kristen Raven, senior YeKeisha Royal, junior Tyreq Miles, freshman Javon Rutledge and sophomore Peterson Saint-Cyrin. The women ran a 5K and the men an 8K.
 
"We have a very young, inexperienced team that still needs work, but from this championship we're looking to move forward with a much more successful indoor season," said Alcorn head coach Fermon Tate.

Senior Angelica Jacobs was Alcorn's highest finisher with a 12th-place showing for the women. She clocked in at 19:40.34 in her final collegiate cross country appearance. Jacobs ended her career as Alcorn's top finisher in every meet over the three years.
 
Royal followed with a personal-record time of 20:43.79 which was a top-25 showing. It topped her previous best of 20:51.28 set at LSU on Sept. 16, 2017.
 
Another personal-record for the Lady Braves came from Raven as she tallied a 22:40.98. It was a huge improvement from her previous best of 24:22.62 set just last weekend at MC.
 
The men were paced by freshman freshman Lamaj Curry who turned in a 29:34.75 for a top-40 placement. Close behind was Miles who PR'd with a 29:52.02. It edged out his previous best of 29:53.49 that he ran at last year's SWAC Championship.
 
Three of the five men set personal-records. In addition to Miles, Peterson Saint-Cyrin notched a 30:54.80 and Rutledge submitted a 33:31.50. Saint-Cyrin's previous best was 30:56.44, and Rutledge's was 36:45.50.
