Lady Braves Head to Vicksburg Thursday to Face Kentucky State

Alcorn Game Notes | Live Stats

VICKSBURG, Miss. – A quick turnaround has the Alcorn State University softball program in action Thursday against Kentucky State in a doubleheader starting at 5:15 p.m. at Vicksburg High School.

The Lady Braves (0-2) are 15-1 all-time against Kentucky State (0-0) and 6-0 under head coach Josef Rankin. KSU's only win in the series came in 2013 when the teams split a doubleheader; KSU took the first game 5-4 before Alcorn won the second 7-0.

Alcorn dropped its 2018 opening day doubleheader at Southern Miss 5-3 and 18-0 Tuesday. The day was highlighted by a three-run homer by freshman Amari Ramsey in her first collegiate at-bat. It gave the Lady Braves a 3-0 lead in the second inning, and Alcorn was ahead until the fourth frame.

The Lady Braves tallied six hits from six different student-athletes Tuesday. In addition to Ramsey, the Alcorn also garnered knocks from freshman Malea Dickerson, senior Robin Harrison, sophomore Alicia Hill, senior Mariah Ortiz and junior Victoria Tyler.

Senior Taylor Hughes enters Thursday ranked third all-time in Alcorn history in both hits (142) and doubles (28), fourth in RBI (82), sixth in walks (48), eighth in both runs scored (75) and 11th in triples (6). She needs nine more hits and five more doubles to become the school's all-time leader in those categories. Taylor was named the 2018 SWAC Preseason Player of the Year after winning both 2017 SWAC Player and Hitter of the Year honors.

It's the season-opener for the Thorobreds who finished 16-21 overall and 8-5 in the SIAC last year. KSU returns junior Jittuan Thompson who led all of NCAA DII in RBI last year with 1.42 per game. Thompson led the team with a .393 batting average and .561 slugging percentage.

The Lady Braves were originally scheduled to play their home opener at the Alcorn Softball Complex on Saturday against Rust College but the doubleheader got rescheduled to March 22. Alcorn will now play its home opener Tuesday at 1 p.m. against Nicholls State.
