NEW ORLEANS – In its first match in nearly a month, the Alcorn State University men's tennis program came out firing and won the doubles point, but the University of New Orleans came back for a 5-2 decision Monday at the University Tennis Center.
Â
At No. 1 doubles, the Alcorn (0-3) duo of sophomore
Suyash Gupta and freshman
Johnatan Parat were nearly flawless as they blanked the top team from UNO (2-1) 6-0. The Braves clinched the doubles point at the No. 2 spot where senior
Kert Kilumets and freshman
Stojan Stojanovski registered a 6-3 victory.
Â
Singles play was highlighted by a three-set victory at the No. 6 position by junior
Nuno Rocha. The Lisbon, Portugal native took the first set 6-4 when he dropped the second 6-1. Though in the end, Rocha was able to pull out the deciding set 6-4 for the win.
Â
The Privateers recorded wins at the No. 2, 3, 4 and 5 singles slots. At the top court, Kilumets had split sets, dropping the first 6-4 and winning the second 7-5. Since the overall match was already over, a tiebreaker was played in lieu of the third and Kilumets came out on the wrong side of a 10-8 battle.
Â
It was Alcorn's first match since Jan. 21 due to rain cancelations.
Â
Both the men and women will be in action Wednesday when they travel to Mississippi College for a 1 p.m. start.
