RUSTON, La. – A record-breaking weekend for senior
Taylor Hughes from the Alcorn State University softball program earned her a spot on the Louisiana Tech All-Tournament Team.

Hughes, a first baseman from Phoenix, Arizona, became the all-time hits leader at Alcorn with 154 in her career. She surpassed the mark of 151 set by Amber Steeves from 2005-08.

Additionally, Hughes ranks third all-time in the Alcorn record book in both doubles (28) and RBI (86), sixth in walks (51), seventh in runs scored (78) and 11th in triples (6).

"Like I said yesterday, Taylor deserves as much attention as she can get. In my opinion, she's one of the best players in the country," said head coach
Josef Rankin. "The thing that makes her one of the best players that's played for Alcorn is the type of teammate and young lady she is. She played the first two games of the year with a fever and didn't say anything because she didn't want to let her teammates down."

Hughes posted a .545 batting average on the weekend after going 6-for-11 at the plate with a walk. She knocked at least one hit in all four games to extend her hitting streak to eight. The lefty already has four multi-hit games this year.

Hughes also posted a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage on 19 putouts over the weekend.

"Taylor had a great weekend personally and she's helping us get better as a program by setting an example," Rankin said.
Hughes was both the 2017 SWAC Player of the Year and Hitter of the Year, and the 2018 SWAC Preseason Player of the Year.

Alcorn's final game of the LA Tech Tournament on Sunday was canceled.

The Lady Braves will be back in action Tuesday when they travel to UL-Monroe for a 4 p.m. start. Alcorn will head to Starkville, Mississippi for five games next weekend at the Mississippi State Tournament.
