Hughes Earns SWAC Hitter of the Week Honors

LORMAN, Miss. - A record-breaking weekend for senior Taylor Hughes earned her SWAC Hitter of the Week accolades, the league office announced Monday.

The Phoenix, Arizona native became the all-time leader in careers hits at Alcorn with 154 over her four years. She registered six hits and a .545 batting average over the weekend to be selected to the LA Tech All-Tournament Team.

In addition to hits, Hughes also ranks third all-time in the school record book in both doubles (28) and RBI (86), sixth in walks (51), seventh in runs scored (78) and 11th in triples (6).

Hughes leads the team with a .444 batting average and .500 on-base percentage on the year. She was named the 2018 SWAC Preseason Player of the Year. Hughes won both 2017 SWAC Player and Hitter of the Year honors last season.

The lefty already has four multi-hit games this year, with two of them coming last week. Defensively, Hughes also posted a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage on 19 putouts over the weekend.

Hughes is riding an eight-game hitting streak. She'll look to extend it this weekend when the Lady Braves compete in the Mississippi State Tournament. The first game is Friday at 6 p.m. against Sam Houston State. Alcorn's doubleheader at UL-Monroe originally scheduled for tomorrow was rescheduled to April 4.
