TUPELO, Miss. – As part of the Make-A-Wish Foundation Mid-South fundraiser, Alcorn State University director of athletics
Derek Horne participated in the Ninth Annual Celebrity Wait Night at Mugshots Grill & Bar on Jan. 23.
Â
"It is something that is near and dear to my heart and I like to support the Make-A-Wish Foundation whenever I have the opportunity to do so," Horne said.
Â
The event raised $21,438.16 to grant wishes for children. A check presentation took place on Jan. 31 at Mugshots.
Â
"It was very fulfilling to raise funds knowing that 100 percent of it will be used to grant a wish for a child with a life threating illness," Horne said.
Â
Horne was one of several Celebrity Waiters with 10 percent of all sales and 100 percent of tips and silent auction items benefiting Make-A-Wish
®, which serves children in North East Mississippi. Horne served as a board member for the Make-A-Wish
® Mid-South for three years and also served as a Celebrity Waiter in 2016. Â
Â
Make-A-Wish
® grants thousands of unique wishes each year. They grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. Every 32 hours Make-A-Wish
® Mid-South grants the wish of a child diagnosed with a life-threatening medical condition.
Â
"It was the largest event to date in which we raised the most money and we were so thrilled that Derek was able to be a part of it," said former Make-A-Wish
® board member and current ambassador Dixie Smith.  "I've known Derek from our time spent on serving on the board together and it was then that I got to know him and saw his love for children."
