Braves Post 3-1 Weekend at SWAC Round-Up, Lady Braves Go 2-3

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – A busy weekend at the second of two SWAC Round-Up events saw the Alcorn State University men's tennis program register a 3-1 record, while the women ended 2-3 over three days.

The Braves finished conference play 4-2 overall, and the women concluded at 4-4.

The men's team was strong at the top. Senior Kert Kilumets and freshman Stojan Stojanovski both went unbeaten at No. 1 and 2 singles, respectively. Kilumets has never lost a SWAC singles match in his two years at Alcorn.

Alcorn's most notable match was a 4-1 victory over Jackson State. The Braves got revenge after the Tigers returned nearly their entire lineup from a squad that squeaked out a 4-3 result to knock Alcorn out of last year's SWAC Championships in the semifinals.

The men also defeated Mississippi Valley State 4-0 and Alabama A&M 4-1. Their only loss was to Alabama State 4-1 as Stojanovski won 6-2, 2-6, 8-6 at No. 2 singles over Carl-Louis Luckmann. Kilumets' match at the No. 1 spot went unfinished.

Kilumets notched a 5-0 conference singles record on the year.

The women started the weekend slow with 4-2 losses to Alabama State, Jackson State and Southern. They came back strong though winning their last two over Mississippi Valley State 4-0 and Alabama A&M 4-1.

Junior Marlene Maier had a big weekend as she was a perfect 5-0 in singles. She played at both the No. 4 and 5 spots.

Maier wrapped-up the conference season with a perfect 8-0 record in singles. Sophomore Anastasia Vaganova was 4-1, primarily at No. 4 singles.
