Alcorn Game Notes | Live Stats

LORMAN, Miss. –
A stretch of five games in three days is on tap for the Alcorn State University softball program when it welcomes Rust College to the Alcorn Softball Complex for a 1 p.m. doubleheader Thursday, prior to a three-game series at Southern this weekend.

The conference opener for the Lady Braves (1-18, 0-0 SWAC), who will begin their 2017 regular season title defense, will be Friday at 3 p.m. at Oak Villa BREC Park. Alcorn and Southern (7-9, 2-1 SWAC) will then play a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.

Alcorn is 3-0 all-time against Rust (0-5). All three meetings came in 2008 including a 37-2 win which are both the most runs scored and largest margin of victory in school history.

Freshmen Amari Ramsey and Desirea Lindsey enter Thursday on seven-game hitting streaks. Ramsey is also on a nine-game on-base streak. She tallied two hits in each game of the doubleheader at Southeastern Louisiana on Tuesday including a lead-off homer in game one.

Senior first baseman Taylor Hughes leads the Lady Braves with a .400 batting average and .452 on-base percentage. She's the all-time hits leader at Alcorn with 164 in four years. She also ranks third in the school record book in both doubles (28) and RBI (91), fifth in walks (54), seventh in runs scored (80) and 11th in triples (6).

The Lady Braves have mixed and matched their lineups all season and have used 18 different batting orders in 19 games this year.

The Jaguars began their conference slate last weekend by taking two of three at Alabama State. Kiara Suttles leads the team with a .467 average, five homers and a .889 slugging percentage. She's the current SWAC Hitter of the Week winner.

Alcorn swept Southern two years ago to start 3-0 in conference which marked the last regular season meetings between the two programs. The Lady Braves were also 3-0 last year with a sweep over Grambling State.
