Lady Braves Set to Host Alabama State in Pivotal SWAC Series

LORMAN, Miss. – In a key SWAC East Division series, the Alcorn State University softball program will host Alabama State for three games including a doubleheader Friday starting at 1 p.m. at the Alcorn Softball Complex.
 
Saturday's game is tentatively scheduled for 1 p.m. but can possibly be moved to avoid potential rain.
 
The Lady Braves (7-24, 4-2 SWAC) are going for their fourth straight win over the Hornets (16-22, 6-3 SWAC). Alcorn swept the series on the road last year by the scores of 4-3, 12-3 and 10-4.
 
Alcorn has won both of its conference series' so far this year. Last weekend, the Lady Braves outscored Jackson State 32-12 in three games two win two of the three. Additionally, the 18 runs scored in game one were the most by Alcorn in a conference game since 2002.
 
The Lady Braves opened conference action by take two out of three from Southern on the road.
 
Freshman Desirea Lindsey is the reigning SWAC Hitter of the Week winner. Over four games last week including one at UL-Monroe, Lindsey hit for a .583 average and .615 on-base percentage.
 
Sophomore Ambria Dorsey is the reigning SWAC Pitcher of the Week winner. She made two appearances last week in the circle and posted a 1-0 record and a 0.88 ERA. She totaled 8.0 innings including 2.0 against UL-Monroe and a complete-game 6.0 frames at Jackson State.
 
Senior first baseman Taylor Hughes leads the Lady Braves with a .398 batting average and .490 on-base percentage. She's the all-time hits leader at Alcorn with 175 in four years. Hughes also ranks second in the school record book in doubles (30) and RBI's (98), third in runs scored (91), fourth in walks (60) and 11th in triples (6). Hughes has won SWAC Hitter of the Week twice this year.
 
Freshman Amari Ramsey recently completed an 18-game hitting-streak and 20-game on-base streak. She's knocked at least one hit in every conference game. Ramsey leads the team with a .567 slugging percentage. She's tied with junior Victoria Tyler with three homers, as Tyler has registered a team-high 20 RBI's.
 
The Lady Braves are 7-0 this season when they score at least eight runs. They did it twice last weekend at JSU.
 
The Lady Braves have mixed and matched their lineups all season and have used 25 different batting orders. Though, they've used the same lineup in all of the last four games.
 
The Hornets are on a five-game winning-streak. They swept South Carolina State in a mid-week doubleheader 7-0 and 6-3 Wednesday. It came after they swept Mississippi Valley State in a three-game series last weekend.
 
Kristin Hunter leads ASU at the plate with a .317 average and .485 slugging. Charlene Castro hits in the middle of the lineup with a .308 average and a team-high 26 RBI's. In the circle, Justine Jean has thrown 96.1 innings with a 6-8 record.
 
The series could go a long way in deciding the SWAC East Division as the two teams are in a three-way fight with Alabama A&M (17-12, 7-2 SWAC) at the top.
