Lady Braves Seek to Level the Score with Nicholls

THIBODAUX, La. – Meeting for the second time this season, the Alcorn State University softball program looks for revenge Tuesday when it travels to Nicholls for a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m. at Swanner Field.
 
The two teams previously met this year in Lorman on Feb. 20. The games were close early, but Nicholls (27-13, 12-6 SLC) was able to pull away late for 6-1 and 8-1 results. Alcorn (8-25, 5-3 SWAC) is going for its first-ever win over the Colonels as the teams have met 19 times before.
 
The Lady Braves are coming off a doubleheader split against Alabama State. Freshman Ashley Arnold registered a walk-off double in game two to give Alcorn a 2-1 win. Game three was postponed due to inclement weather and make-up date has not yet been announced. The Lady Braves have won four of the last five against the Lady Hornets dating back to last year.
 
Alcorn also won a conference series over Jackson State. The Lady Braves outscored the Lady Tigers 32-12 over the three games. Additionally, the 18 runs scored in game one were the most by Alcorn in a conference game since 2012.
 
After beating JSU, Alcorn swept the SWAC weekly awards on April 8. Freshman Desirea Lindsey won SWAC Hitter of the Week and sophomore Ambria Dorsey earned SWAC Pitcher of the Week. The Lady Braves have won five SWAC weekly honors this year. Senior Taylor Hughes has won twice.
 
Hughes leads the Lady Braves with a .378 batting average and .467 on-base percentage. She's the all-time hits leader at Alcorn with 176 in four years. Hughes also ranks second in the school record book in doubles (30) and RBI's (98), third in runs scored (91), fourth in walks (60) and 11th in triples (6). She was named the 2018 SWAC Preseason Player of the Year after winning both 2017 SWAC Player and Hitter of the Year honors last season.
 
Freshman Amari Ramsey recently completed an 18-game hitting-streak and 20-game on-base streak. She leads the team with a .567 slugging percentage. Ramsey tied with junior Victoria Tyler with three homers, as Tyler has tallied a team-high 20 RBI's.
 
The Lady Braves are 7-0 this season when they score at least eight runs. They did it twice at JSU.
 
Alcorn has mixed and matched its lineups all season and have used 26 different batting orders.
 
Nicholls is in first-place in the Southland Conference Standings. The season has been highlighted by a 10-game winning-streak in March.
 
Kasey Frederick leads the team at the plate with a .370 average, .630 slugging, six homers and 29 RBI's. In the circle, Megan Landry carries a 15-7 record with a 1.87 ERA in 127.1 innings.
 
Alcorn will return home this weekend for a three-game series against Alabama A&M. Game one is scheduled for 3 p.m. Friday at the Alcorn Softball Complex.
