Lady Braves Look to Quiet Streaking AAMU

Alcorn Game Notes | Live Stats

LORMAN, Miss. –
The Alcorn State University softball program will look to cool off a red-hot Alabama A&M squad this weekend when it hosts the Bulldogs at 3 p.m. Friday and a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Alcorn Softball Complex.

Alcorn (8-27, 5-3 SWAC) has had good success against AAMU (19-12, 9-2 SWAC) under head coach Josef Rankin. The Lady Braves took two out of three from the Bulldogs on the road last year after sweeping them at home in 2016.

Though this year, the Bulldogs come to Lorman on fire. AAMU has won seven in a row and sits in first place in the SWAC East Division standings. The Lady Braves will have to win the series if they want to repeat as SWAC East Champions.

Last weekend, Alcorn split a doubleheader against Alabama State. Freshman Ashley Arnold registered a walk-off double in game two to give Alcorn a 2-1 win. Game three was postponed due to inclement weather and make-up date has not yet been announced.

The Lady Braves have not lost a conference series this year. They took two out of three from both Southern and Jackson State to start it off. The Lady Braves outscored the Lady Tigers 32-12 over the three games.

Senior Taylor Hughes leads the Lady Braves with a .362 batting average and .450 on-base percentage. She's the all-time hits leader at Alcorn with 176 in four years.

Freshman Amari Ramsey leads the team with a .550 slugging percentage. Ramsey is tied with junior Victoria Tyler with three homers, as Tyler has tallied a team-high 20 RBI's.

The Lady Braves are 7-0 this season when they score at least eight runs. They did it twice at JSU.

AAMU is coming off doubleheader sweeps over Mississippi Valley State and Tuskegee, and a three-game sweep over Jackson State. The Bulldogs also swept a three-game series over Grambling State.

Tiana Sanders leads the squad with a .408 average, .755 slugging, nine homers and 33 RBI's. Lauren Hayden is the team's ace with a 10-1 record and a 3.44 ERA in 81.0 innings.
