MVSU Rallies Late to Grab Game One

ITTA BENA, Miss. – The first of a three-game series went in favor of Mississippi Valley State as the Delta Devilettes took an 8-3 decision over the Alcorn State University softball program Friday at the MVSU Softball Field.

"We did well at jumping out early today, but MVSU did a better job with making plays. We're still learning how to approach each game with consistent focus and relentless effort," said head coach Josef Rankin.

Alcorn (11-30, 8-4 SWAC) got on the board first with three runs in the second inning.  It started with singles by senior Robin Harrison and freshman Malea Dickerson, and a walk by freshman Teona Bowles loaded the bases. With two outs, freshman Amari Ramsey delivered a hit to center to score two runs. Bowles then stole home to make it 3-0.

MVSU (11-28, 6-8 SWAC) got back in it with two runs in the third to cut the deficit to 3-2. It came on a two-out, two RBI double to left center by Lexany Terrones.

The Lady Braves were still on top until the bottom of the fifth when the Delta Devilettes took advantage of defensive miscues. Alcorn committed three errors in the inning including one in right field which plated four runs.

Harrison started in the circle and struck out a trio in 2.2 innings. Junior Winter Ridgeway came in and allowed just one earned run in 3.1 frames of relief. Alyssa Montes threw a complete-game for MVSU to pick up the win.

Ramsey highlighted the offense by going 1-for-3 with a walk and two RBI's. In addition to Harrison and Dickerson, freshman Ashley Arnold also knocked a single in the contest.

"We just need to get some rest tonight and go back to work tomorrow and work hard to win the series," Rankin said.

Alcorn and MVSU will wrap-up the series Saturday when they play a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
