Lady Braves Take the Field Wednesday at UL-Monroe; JSU Doubleheader Moved to Thursday

Alcorn Game Notes | ULM Live Stats

MONROE, La. – In its first games in eight days, the Alcorn State University softball program will be back in action Wednesday when it heads to UL-Monroe for a 4 p.m. contest at the ULM Softball Complex.

Additionally, Alcorn (5-21, 2-1 SWAC) will play a conference doubleheader Thursday starting at 4 p.m. against Jackson State (7-20, 1-8 SWAC) on the road. The two teams will complete the series Friday in a game tentatively scheduled for 3 p.m. but can be moved earlier. They will not play Saturday due to the threat of rain.

The Lady Braves will take on the Warhawks (18-13, 6-6 SBC) for the first time under head coach Josef Rankin who is in his fourth season. The last time the two programs met, they split a doubleheader with Alcorn winning the first game 4-3 but dropping the second 9-0 in 2014.

Alcorn opened conference play by taking two of three from Southern on March 23-24. The Lady Braves dropped the opener in nine innings before coming back to sweep Saturday's doubleheader 16-2 and 8-4. The 16 runs scored were the most in a conference game by Alcorn since 2004 in a 16-12 victory over Jackson State. The Lady Braves did not commit an error in either game Saturday.

Senior Taylor Hughes went on to win SWAC Hitter of the Week honors for the second time this season. She hit for a .545 average in three games and carries a .400 average and .488 on-base percentage on the season. Hughes has a team-high 11 multi-hit games this year.

Hughes is the all-time hits leader at Alcorn with 170 in four years. Hughes also ranks second in the school record book in doubles (30) and RBI's (96), top-five in runs scored (87) and walks (58), and 11th in triples (6).

Freshman Amari Ramsey is riding a 14-game hitting-streak and 16-game on-base streak. She was 4-for-10 over the weekend against Southern with three doubles. Ramsey has hit three homers this year and leads the team with a .556 slugging percentage. She's batting for a .347 average.

Fellow freshman Desirea Lindsey turned in a four-for-four performance in game two against the Jaguars. She's the only Lady Brave to tally four hits in a game this year.

Alcorn is 5-0 this season when it scores at least eight runs. The Lady Braves have mixed and matched their lineups all season and have used 23 different batting orders.

The Warhawks are on a six-game winning-streak. They swept a three-game series against Coastal Carolina over the weekend after beating Jackson State in a doubleheader last week 11-0 and 8-0.

ULM will play a game tonight at home against Southeastern Louisiana before hosting the Lady Braves.

Jayden Mount leads the team with a .402 average and .567 slugging. She's one of two Warhawks hitting over .400 as Sydney McKay carries a .414 average. Paige Murray is ULM's ace with a 10-3 record and 3.38 ERA in 95.1 innings.

The Lady Braves swept Jackson State in a three-game series last year in Lorman, outscoring them 20-4.
