Alcorn wrapped-up the regular season with a 14-33 record including 11-7 in SWAC play. The Lady Braves will await their seeding after games this weekend with Alabama State and Alabama A&M are completed. Alcorn will either be the No. 1 or 2 seed from the SWAC East Division.
Â
TSU won the SWAC West Division with a 22-16-1 overall mark and 13-5 in conference.
Â
The Lady Braves had an opportunity to get on the board early as they loaded the bases with one out in the first inning. Though, the Tigers were able to escape after catcher Alyssa Garcia picked off a runner on third, and pitcher Felicia Garza caught a liner to end the threat.
Â
That inning flipped the momentum in the game as TSU went on to post 13 hits including a pair of four-run frames. Garza tossed a complete-game shutout to pick up the win.
Â
"We celebrated our seniors, but that was about it for today. We didn't do a whole lot of good. We had an opportunity in the first inning, but we made a mistake on the bases and never recovered from it," said head coach
Josef Rankin.
Â
Alcorn registered hits from Hughes and freshmen
Desirea Lindsey and
Malea Dickerson. The Lady Braves used three different pitchers including freshman
Lindsey Eldridge, sophomore
Ambria Dorsey and junior
Winter Ridgeway.
Â
"I keep talking about the youth of the team. We're not able to consistently bounce back and battle adversity; but we have to find a way to do it because we're going to face tough times starting next Wednesday. We'll see what happens with the rest of the conference this weekend and we'll go from there," Rankin said. "It's about flushing this now. The regular season is over and now it's on to the tournament."
Â
The 2018 SWAC Championships are slated for May 9-12 in Montgomery, Alabama on the campus of Alabama State University. Alcorn won't know its seed or opponent until Sunday.
