HOUSTON, Texas – After a strong start yesterday, Aaron Worrell claimed the decathlon title and Justice Edwards was second in the heptathlon as the Alcorn State University men's and women's track and field teams wrapped up day two of the 2018 SWAC Outdoor Championships Saturday at the PVAMU Track Stadium.
A native of Christ Church, Barbados, Worrell won the 100-meter dash (10.68), the 400-meter dash (50.15), the high jump (2.04m), and the long jump (7.11m) and was second in the shot put (10.52m) on Friday. He then secured the top spot on the podium as he took second in the discus (29.94m) and posted a pair of third-place finishes in the 1,500-meter run (5:04.92) and the 110-meter hurdles (15.87). Worrell finished with 6,369 points to edge Prairie View's Tristian Ham (6,249) and Sunne Rodriguez-Weems (5,968).
Edwards was third in the high jump (1.58m) and fifth in the 100-meter hurdles (15.29) on day one. The sophomore then went second in both the long jump (5.28m) and the javelin throw (30.25m) on day two to finish with 4,210 points.
Both teams set a number of personal records. On the men's side, Kemar Cumberbatch qualified for the finals of the 100-meter dash after crossing the line sixth with a time of 10.43. He also posted a 21.39 to come in ninth in the 200-meter dash. Jaylen Muhammed ran a 10.51 to place 10th in the 100 meters and a 21.68 for 14th in the 200 meters. Bralon Robinson ran a 10.45 to finish eighth in the 100-meter prelims as he also qualified for the finals. In the long jump, J'Koven Celestine leapt 7.39 meters to come in fifth.
The Lady Braves had multiple third-place finishes as Jada Hunt reached the finals of the 100 meters (11.63), Tymesha Nabors qualified for the finals of the 400-meter hurdles (1:01.64), and Angelica Jacobs qualified for the finals of the 800-meter run (2:14.68).
The Braves are currently seventh in the team standings with 17 points through seven events scored, while the Lady Braves are ninth with eight points through eight events.
Alcorn will wrap up competition tomorrow beginning at 9 a.m. with the women's discus and long jump. The final day will be broadcast on the SWAC Digital Network.
