CLINTON, Miss. – After a slight delay due to lightning in the area, the Alcorn State University men's and women's cross country teams started their seasons Friday at the Mississippi College Season Opener, held at Choctaw Trails.
Â
The men's race was originally scheduled as an 8K to begin at 5 p.m. but was shortened to a 5K to try and beat the rain. While the Braves escaped the elements, the Lady Braves weren't so fortunate as their 5K race was run in a constant downpour.
Â
"Considering the conditions, I think all of the athletes did their best," said interim head coach
Sandra Glover. "The freshmen runners got their first taste of Choctaw Trails.
Lamaj Curry and
Makayla Gates showed a strong opening for the freshmen. Senior
Angelica Jacobs was the front runner for the women and junior
Tyreq Miles was the front runner for the men."
Â
For the Lady Braves, Jacobs posted a 21:54.46. Junior
Shaquanda Hill followed at 22:56.93, with Gates right on her heels with a time of 23:09.69. Â Senior
YeKeshia Royal finished in 24:52.48, freshman
Kristen Raven came in at 25:54.38, and senior
Alanna Bass ran a 36:11.00.
Â
The Lady Braves totaled 236 points to finish ninth out of 11 teams.
Â
Miles and Curry turned in top times for the Braves with an 18:57.98 and a 19:04.32, respectively. Sophomore
Peterson Saint-Cyrin wasn't far behind, crossing the finish line in 20:43.96. Freshmen
James Jackson (21:32.84) and
Javon Rutledge (24:16.75) rounded out the men's side.
Â
The Braves totaled 287 points to grab 10th place out of 13 teams.
Â
Both teams have two weeks off to prepare for the Louisiana Tech Mook 4 Invitational, held at Tech Farm in Ruston, Louisiana on Sept. 15. The men's 4-miler is scheduled for an 8:30 a.m. start, while the women's 4K race will follow at 9:15 a.m.
