LAKE CHARLES, La. – Even under tough conditions, the scores continue get better each week for the Alcorn State University men's and women's cross country programs as they competed in the 2018 Lake Charles Toyota McNeese Cowboy Stampede on Saturday at the Enos Derbonne Sports Complex.
Â
"Today was another wet and muddy course, but I really wanted the student-athletes to focus on competing and not the weather or course conditions. I will continue to push the teams to run more as a group," said Alcorn coach
Sandra Glover.
Â
Senior
Angelica Jacobs set the pace for the women with a top-25 finish. She clocked in at 20:13.6 in the 5K race. It was an enormous improvement from the 5K at Mississippi College on Aug. 31 where she ran a 21:54.46. MC was the only previous 5K race this year.
Â
Jacobs has been the top finisher for the Lady Braves in every meet in her career.
Â
Other big improvements for the women came from senior
YeKeshia Royal and junior
Shaquanda Hill. Royal tallied a 21:39.8 to place 58th and crushed her previous season-best of 24:52.48. Hill registered a 22:36.0 which was good for 72nd and topped her previous best of 22:56.93. Hill neared her personal-record of 22:28.51 set on Oct. 14, 2017
Â
The men were guided by freshman
Lamaj Curry who notched a four-mile time of 24:04.3 to end in 59th. Junior
Tyreq Miles was Alcorn's second finisher with a 25:36.7, while sophomore Titus Kibii was close behind at 25:52.8.
Â
"The women have to stay closer to Angelica who was our front runner. Yekeisha and Shaquanda ran season-best times to work on closing that gap," Glover said. "Tyreq and Titus are closing the gap and staying closer to Lamaj who was in front."
Â
Alcorn's final three meets will be run at Choctaw Trails in Clinton, Mississippi. It includes the 2018 SWAC Championships slated for Monday, Oct. 22. Alcorn's next meet is at 8 a.m. on Oct. 6.
