Alcorn Begins 2019 Campaign This Weekend in Birmingham

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Fermon Tate era begins this weekend for the Alcorn State University track & field programs as the Braves and Lady Braves compete Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Samford Open and Emory Invitational, held at the Birmingham CrossPlex.

Tate begins his first season as head coach. He inherits a program that includes two individual SWAC Champions, a championship 4x400m relay team and three school record holders.

"I feel Alcorn will be in the thick of things at the conference championship this year. We have a young and talented team that needs to stay fit and healthy," Tate said.

The Alcorn women feature two seniors, eight juniors, seven sophomores and five freshmen. Senior Angelica Jacobs is the school record holder in the 800m, both indoors and outdoors. She holds an indoor best of 2:18.55 and a personal-record of 2:14.51.

Another returning school-record holder is junior Jessica Ransom in the 400m. She won the event at the 2017 SWAC Indoor meet with a 56.06, and then crushed her personal-record outdoors in 2018 with a 53.76.

The entire championship 4x400m relay team returns. Ransom was joined by junior Nathalya McMillion, sophomore DeKari Courtney and junior Tymesha Nabors to post a 3:40.55 to win the 2018 outdoor crown.

On the men's side, the Braves bring back a two-sport athlete in sophomore Bralon Robinson who's also on the football team. Robinson is the reigning SWAC Indoor Champion in the 60m with a 6.74 time. He advanced to compete at NCAA Regionals last year outdoors.

Alcorn has a lot of new faces on the men's side with eight newcomers. The team is composed of lone senior Harold Horton, three juniors, six sophomores and seven freshmen.

Alcorn will be one of 26 schools competing at the Birmingham CrossPlex this weekend. Other SWAC schools include Alabama A&M, Alabama State, Grambling State, Jackson State, Mississippi Valley State, Southern and Texas Southern.

The schedule begins at 7 p.m. Friday and continues at 8 a.m. Saturday. Click here to follow the live results for the Samford Open, and click here for the Emory Invitational.
