Taylor, Duffey Win SWAC Weekly Honors

LORMAN, Miss. – After helping the Alcorn State University football program clinch its sixth consecutive SWAC East Division title, junior Juwan Taylor was named the SWAC Defensive Player of the Week, and freshman Niko Duffey won SWAC Newcomer of the Week.

The duo played a significant part in Alcorn's 24-28 victory over Alabama A&M on Saturday.

Taylor, a Jackson, Mississippi native, shined with 10 tackles, an interception and 0.5 TFL. His interception came late in the third quarter as the Bulldogs were in the red zone and Taylor came up with a pick in the end zone. His 10 tackles were one shy of his career high.

Duffey, from Tampa, Florida, turned in a 100-yard rushing performance and a touchdown. His score came on a one-yard plunge up the middle in the second quarter. Duffey carried the ball 17 times for a 5.9 yards per rush average. His long on the day was a 20-yard rush.

As a team, Alcorn has now won 12 SWAC weekly awards this year. It was Duffey's second honor after winning SWAC Newcomer of the Week on Oct. 7 after the win against Alabama State.

The Braves will return to the field Saturday when they travel to Jackson State for a 2 p.m. start. With a win, Alcorn would clinch home field advantage for the SWAC Championship.
