Alcorn Names Jimmy Joseph New Track & Field, Cross Country Head Coach

LORMAN, Miss. – Jimmy Joseph has been announced as the head coach of the Alcorn State University cross country and track and field programs, announced by director of athletics Derek Horne.

Over the course of his career, he has overseen 20 All-Conference athletes, 11 Regional Qualifiers, 10 Academic All-Americans, a Girls LHSAA 3A State Championship, Southland Conference Indoor and Outdoor Champions plus a Men's NJCAA Javelin National Champion and All-American.

"I'm extremely excited to be a part of this great organization," said Joseph. "I can't wait to get with my teams and produce some outstanding talent."

Joseph arrives at Alcorn after serving as the head coach at Garden City Community College in Garden City, Kansas. In addition to his head coaching duties, he also helped host a NJCCAA National Cross Country Meet.

The Baton Rouge native has previous SWAC experience as he was hired in Oct. 2014 as the associate head coach and recruiting director at Southern. He stayed with the Jaguars for four seasons.

Joseph has also worked at the high school level where he spent time as the head track & field coach at Donaldsonville High School for three years. He coached the team to the Louisiana High School State Championship Meet, winning the girls' competition.

Joseph earned his bachelor's degree in Kinesiology from Southeastern Louisiana and went on to become the assistant track and field coach and recruiting coordinator at SLU.

"Coach Joseph has experienced success at many different levels of track & field. We're excited for him to be a leader and mentor for our cross country and track & field student-athletes as we move into the indoor season," said Horne. "I'd also like to thank our assistant coach Wesley Stephens for the job he's done this semester during this transition period. He's been outstanding with the young men and women and has kept the teams focused and motivated."
