LORMAN, Miss. – The Alcorn State University men's and women's tennis programs combined to play eight matches in four days over the weekend.
The men dropped doubleheaders to Jacksonville State 4-1 and 4-0 at home, and to Ole Miss 4-0 and 4-0 on the road. The women fell at home to UL-Monroe 5-0, Jacksonville State 4-1 and 4-0, and McNeese State 7-0.
The high points came against Jacksonville State where each the men and women won a singles court. At men's No. 2 singles, junior
Gjorgji Popovski came back to stun Joaquin Vallejo 0-6, 6-1, 6-4. At women's No. 2 singles, junior
Anastasia Vaganova crushed Alessia Locati 6-0, 6-0.
In matches where the opposition clinched, Alcorn was going toe-to-toe on several courts. At No. 1 singles, sophomore
Johnatan Parat had split sets with Jacksonville State's Aljaz Kaplia 6-4, 2-6. Popovski had the same fate at No. 3 singles where he was tied with Guillermo Agost 6-3, 4-6 in his other doubleheader match.
At Ole Miss, Parat dropped the first set 6-3 but was leading 2-1 in the second set at No. 2 singles when the Rebels clinched.
In the week ahead, both the Braves and Lady Braves will travel to Delta State for matches at 2 p.m. Tuesday. The Lady Braves will then head to Ole Miss on Wednesday at 1 p.m., while the Braves prepare for UL-Lafayette's Ragin' Cajun Invitational next weekend in Lafayette, Louisiana.
Alcorn's next home match will be Wednesday, Feb. 20 when both the men and women host Mississippi College at 2 p.m.
