Alcorn Readies for 2019 SWAC Indoor Championships

SWAC Championship Central | Schedule of Events

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Returning to the Birmingham CrossPlex for the sixth time this year, the Alcorn State University men's and women's track & field programs will compete in the 2019 SWAC Indoor Championships on Thursday and Friday.

Alcorn will look to improve upon its standings from last year when the men finished in seventh and the women eighth. Alcorn's last indoor championship came in 2001 when the Lady Braves won it.

Sophomore sprinter Bralon Robinson is the defending champion in the 60m. He won the event last year with a 6.74 which remains his personal-record. Robinson made his first appearance of 2019 this past weekend at the Samford Invitational where he ran a 7.00 to place fourth in the preliminaries.

In last year's pentathlon, sophomore DeKari Courtney earned runner-up honors with 3,108 points. Courtney has been Alcorn's top sprinter in the 60m hurdles this year with a 9.09 set at the Emory Invite.

Other returning scorers from last year include sophomore Peterson Saint-Cyrin who placed fifth in the 800m with a 1:59.26. Junior Shameka Grover earned sixth after reaching the finals of the 200m with a 24.86. Junior Angelica Jacobs turned in a 2:20.40 to place fourth in the 800m.

Jacobs is coming off a big weekend where she set a personal-record of 5:27.43 in the mile. It's the second-fastest time in the SWAC this season and it crushed her previous personal-record of 5:41.63. Jacobs was less than a second away from breaking the school record of 5:26.96 set by Karin Reeder in 2002.

Freshman sprinter Shamarah Shannon holds the third-fastest time in the league this season in the 200m with a 24.75.

Senior sprinter Jessica Ransom won the 400m indoors in 2017 with a school record time of 56.06. Her season-best this year is a 58.46 set at the Jaguar Invitational on Feb. 3.

Events are scheduled to start at 8:30 a.m. on both days.
