Lady Braves Host Kentucky State Thursday, Two Games in Vicksburg Friday

Alcorn Game Notes

LORMAN, Miss. –
A three-game series will feature two different venues as the Alcorn State University softball program will host Kentucky State at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Alcorn Softball Complex, followed by a 5:30 p.m. doubleheader at Vicksburg High School.

The Lady Braves (0-2) opened the season last weekend against North Alabama. Senior infielder Victoria Tyler moved into the top-10 all-time in school history in RBI's with 63. Tyler is four hits away from 100 in her career, and also needs three more doubles to crack into the top-10 in Alcorn history.

Junior Brittney Triplett is at the top of the Alcorn stat sheet after going 2-for-4 at the plate with a walk. Tyler reached base five times in seven plate appearances for a .833 on-base percentage after she was hit by a pitch three times and also recorded a hit and a walk. Sophomore Desirea Lindsey registered a hit in each game.

KSU is off to a 3-3 start. The Thorobreds went 2-2 last weekend at the HBCU Division II Tournament, beating Virginia Union 4-2 and Bowie State 10-2, but falling to Winston-Salem 6-1 and Claflin 8-1.

The Thorobreds were 21-21 overall and 11-7 SIAC last season.

"We've got a good opponent coming in Thursday and we need to make some strides this week. We need to compete with energy," said head coach Josef Rankin. "There were some good things last week – starting pitching, dugout energy and creating offensive opportunities. This week, we need to build on those positives. We also need to improve our defense and do a better job of cashing in on those offensive opportunities."

Alcorn is 16-2 all-time against KSU, and 7-1 under Rankin.

"We've got to take a step forward this week and play with greater urgency," Rankin said.

The Lady Braves are the two-time defending SWAC East Division champions. They've posted three consecutive winning seasons in conference for the first time in program history. Alcorn is 24-12 SWAC the last two seasons and 35-18 SWAC the last three seasons; both marks are the best in the SWAC East Division.
