Alcorn Posts 1-1 SWAC Records at Round-Up after Narrow Defeats to AAMU

BATON ROUGE, La. – After a pair of 6-0 wins over Mississippi Valley State to open SWAC Round-Up, the Alcorn State University tennis programs were edged 4-3 on the women's side and 4-1 on the men's against Alabama A&M on Sunday.

The Lady Braves also started their match Saturday against Southern, but it was halted with the score 2-2 due to the rain. The two teams will pick up where they left off on Thursday, March 14 at the second SWAC Round-Up.

Alcorn continued to play not at full strength. The men were without junior Gjorgji Popovski who had been playing No. 3 singles, while the women were still without senior Ammaarah Tim and junior Alessandra Maganuco who played No. 2 and 3 singles last year, respectively.

"I am very proud of my team. We came a long way without the full roster and we fought hard in every match. It's so rewarding to see how the players are competing. The SWAC is stronger than ever this year and we are definitely one of the strongest teams. We are very motivated and looking forward to the next SWAC Round-Up," said head coach Barbara Oliveira.

Against AAMU, both the Braves and Lady Braves won the doubles point. The men picked up victories at the No. 1 and 3 positions where the teams of sophomores Johnatan Parat and Stojan Stojanovski, and senior Nuno Rocha and freshman Kareem Bowe both won 6-4.

In men's singles, the Braves were ahead in two unfinished matches. Stojanovski was up a set 7-6, 0-2 at the No. 1 spot, while Parat was close to closing it out at No. 2 with a 6-4, 5-4 edge.

For the women, the senior duo of Bianca Birkenstock and Klavdija Bukovec made quick work at No. 2 doubles for a 6-1 victory. The doubles point came down to the No. 1 position where junior Anastasia Vaganova and freshman Stefany Grlj pulled out a 6-4 win.

The Lady Braves won the top two singles courts in straight sets. Birkenstock finished on top 6-0, 7-6, while Vaganova cruised to a 6-1, 6-4 win.

Alcorn dropped No. 5 and 6 singles in straight sets, and No. 3 and 4 in three setters.

Vaganova was undefeated on the weekend. She won all of her singles and doubles matches which included a singles win in the unfinished match against Southern.

Alcorn will be off until Monday, March 4 when both the men and women host Mississippi College at 2 p.m. at the Alcorn Tennis Courts.
