Lady Braves Bounce Back for 2-2 Weekend at SWAC Round-Up

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – In what started as a bleak weekend, the Alcorn State University women's tennis program responded with a pair of victories to post a 2-2 record at the second SWAC Round-Up, hosted by Alabama State.
 
The Lady Braves (3-3 SWAC) fell to Southern 4-2 and Alabama State 4-0 before coming back to defeat Grambling State 4-1 and Prairie View A&M 4-1.
 
"It was another weekend against tough SWAC opponents for the men and women. We played against strong competition and had good individual performances, but we're still looking to play altogether as a team," said Alcorn head coach Barbara Oliveira. "The weekend got better as it went along and we saw a better team effort against Prairie View. We improved during the weekend."
 
The Braves (1-3 SWAC) dropped matches to Alabama State 4-0 and PVAMU 4-2, and a non-conference match at Auburn 4-0.
 
"The results for the men are obviously not what we wished. Our guys were just swinging at balls rather than playing tennis. We'll keep practicing to make it better and start focusing on our final matches. The good thing is that both the men and women have clinched spots for the SWAC Championships," Oliveira said.
 
Alcorn's first match against Southern was resumed from the first SWAC Round-Up where the score was tied 2-2. No. 1 and No. 4 singles matches were still in progress in the third sets, but the Jaguars were able to pull out both of them to avoid a doubles match.
 
Both the Alcorn men and women got swept by the defending champions Alabama State before the Lady Braves turned it around.
 
The Lady Braves won the doubles point Saturday against GSU. With momentum on their side, they breezed to a trio of straight-set singles victories from junior Anastasia Vaganova, freshman Stefany Grlj and senior Klavdija Bukovec at No. 3-5.
 
Alcorn again won the doubles point Sunday against PVAMU. The teams of Vaganova/Grlj and senior Ammaarah Tim and junior Veronika Pytlikova won matches against GSU and PVAMU. In singles, the Lady Braves downed the Panthers with victories from Grlj, Bukovec and senior Bianca Birkenstock.
 
"I'm proud of the hard-work our teams have put forward. We need to stay strong, keep improving and stay focused," Oliveira said. "Our women's win over Prairie View shows we are capable of stepping up."
 
Both the Alcorn men and women will play at home Wednesday when they host Mississippi College at 2 p.m. at the Alcorn Tennis Courts.
