LORMAN, Miss. – Both the Alcorn State University men's and women's tennis programs will be in action Wednesday when they host Mississippi College at 2 p.m. at the Alcorn Tennis Courts.
Â
The Lady Braves (3-3 SWAC) enter the match on a winning-streak after beating Grambling State and Prairie View A&M by the scores of 4-1. Alcorn won the doubles point in both matches, and senior
Stefany Grlj and senior
Klavdija Bukovec came out on top at No. 3 and 4 singles, respectively.
Â
The Alcorn women are getting closer to full strength – something they have not been this season. The Lady Braves returned senior
Ammaarah Tim at the second SWAC Round-Up this past weekend. They've been without junior
Alessandra Maganuco the entire year after she played No. 3 singles last year and was named to the SWAC All-Tournament Team.
Â
Junior
Anastasia Vaganova is undefeated in singles in conference with a 4-0 record at the No. 2 position. Senior
Bianca Birkenstock has played at the top court for nearly the entire year and carries a 3-2 conference record.
Â
The Lady Braves have been strong in doubles. All three of their doubles teams have winning records in conference.
Â
The Alcorn men (1-3 SWAC) most recently dropped a hard-fought match to PVAMU 4-2. The Braves won the doubles point, including an impressive 6-0 victory at the No. 3 position by senior
Nuno Rocha and freshman
Kareem Bowe.
Â
At No. 1 singles, junior
Gjorgji Popovski held his weight with a 6-1, 6-0 win. The Braves have mixed and matched their lineups this season as Popovski and sophomores
Johnatan Parat and
Stojan Stojanovski have all played No. 1 singles.
Â
The MC men are 4-6 overall and 2-1 GSC. They are coming off back-to-back wins over Spring Hill 6-1 and Dallas Baptist 7-0. The MC women are 7-4 overall and 2-1 GSC. They've won three in row with victories over Mobile 6-3, Spring Hill 7-0 and Dallas Baptist 6-1.
