Braves Drop Two in Edinburg

EDINBURG, Texas – A pair of non-conference matches provided more experience against tough competition for the Alcorn State University men's tennis program as it fell to Nicholls 6-1 Saturday and UT-Rio Grande Valley 4-0 Sunday at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
 
Sophomore Stojan Stojanovski picked up the lone victory of the weekend with a 6-0, 7-5 decision. It came at No. 2 singles against Nicholls over Tobias Lentz.
 
The Braves nearly pulled out another win at No. 1 singles against the Colonials, but junior Gjorgji Popovski was edged 3-6, 6-2, 6-1.
 
In doubles, Nicholls clinched the point with results at No. 1 and 3, but the Braves were winning in an unfinished match at No. 2. The team of Stojanovski and junior Ivan Matas were one game away, leading 5-4.
 
Against UTRGV, Alcorn battled in three highly contested doubles matches. UTRGV was able to squeeze out 7-5 and 6-4 wins at No. 1 and 2 respectively, and held a slight 6-5 edge at No. 3.
 
The closest singles match was at No. 2 where Stojanovski dropped the first set 6-4, but was even 4-4 when the match went unfinished.
 
Both the Alcorn men and women will resume conference play on Thursday, April 4 when they take on Jackson State at 12 p.m. in Vicksburg, Mississippi.
