Lady Braves Advance to Semifinals with Win over AAMU, Braves Eliminated in Quarterfinals

NEW ORLEANS, La. – It was a day of mixed emotions for the Alcorn State University tennis programs as the women defeated Alabama A&M 4-3 to keep its season alive, but the Braves fell 4-2 to Jackson State on Friday at the Pepsi Tennis Center.
 
The fifth-seeded Lady Braves pulled out a come-from-behind thriller over the third-seeded Lady Bulldogs. After dropping the doubles point, Alcorn rallied to win four singles matches including the clincher at No. 1 singles by freshman Stefany Grlj.
 
Singles play started with a win by Veronika Pytlikova 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 6 position. Two-time All-Conference First-Team selection Anastasia Vaganova followed it up with a 7-5, 6-4 victory at the No. 2 spot. Senior Ammaarah Tim kept it going with a 6-3, 6-4 win at the No. 4 court.
 
With the overall match tied 3-3, all eyes were on No. 1 singles where Grlj closed out Beatriz Gutierrez 7-6, 7-5. It was the first clinching match of Grlj's career.
 
For the men, the fifth-seeded Braves picked up a solo doubles win at No. 3 as the team of junior Ivan Matas and sophomore Johnatan Parat finished on top 6-3. Though, the third-seeded Tigers grabbed No. 1 and 2 doubles to earn the doubles point.
 
In singles, Alcorn remained strong at the top as it had been all season. Junior Gjorgji Popovski notched a 2-6, 7-6, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles over Andrey Alawi.
 
At No. 2 singles, All-Conference First-Team honoree Stojan Stojanovski destroyed Thomas Torres 6-0, 6-0.
 
The Tigers clinched at No. 4 singles in a tight 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 battle. The Braves were winning in an unfinished match at No. 3 where Parat was up a set 7-6, 4-5.
 
The Lady Braves advance to the semifinals where they'll take on second-seeded Prairie View A&M at 9 a.m. Saturday. Alcorn won the regular season meeting 4-1.
