LORMAN, Miss. – The academic success continued in Spring 2019 as 29 student-athletes from Alcorn State University tallied a perfect 4.0 grade point average in the semester.
The student-athletes represented 14 different sports on campus.
Additionally, the men's tennis program submitted the highest team GPA with a 3.76, while the women's tennis program turned in a 3.63.
"I am proud of the performance of this exemplary group of student athletes," said interim assistant vice president for athletic compliance & student-athlete services Cyrus Russ. "They are to be commended for their commitment to excellence in the classroom."
Including the fall semester, 55 student-athletes recorded a 4.0 GPA in 2018-19. Over the last six semesters (not including the summer), a total of 190 student-athletes have registered a 4.0 GPA.
Five student-athletes currently carry a cumulative 4.0 GPA including junior
Ivan Matas and freshman
Santiago Rocca from men's tennis, sophomore Malea Dickerson from softball, freshman Jurnee Calhoun from volleyball and freshman Kiana Allen from women's track & field.
"I'm very happy for all the student-athletes who accomplished their academic goals this year. Student-athletes are students first, and I praise the hard-work and devotion that's shown in the classroom," said director of athletics
Derek Horne. "I'm proud of the way our student-athletes represent the University both on and off the field. They continue to prepare themselves for future success."
