CONCORD, N.C. – Leishaun Ealey and
Alvin Wilson from the Alcorn State University football program were two of 12 collegiate athletes invited to compete for roles as tire changes, carriers and jackmen.
Â
Ealey and Wilson will attend the fourth annual NASCAR Drive for Diversity National Pit Crew Combine on Friday. They were chosen after NASCAR and Rev Racing followed a national talent search at universities across the country.
Â
Led by Phil Horton, Rev Racing director of athletic performance, the four-hour combine will test the athletes in a series of strength, agility and flexibility exercises to assess their fitness for a NASCAR pit crew. Additionally, each athlete will learn how to perform tasks required of over-the-wall crew members.
Â
The top performing athletes will earn a spot in the NASCAR Drive for Diversity Pit Crew Development program where they will spend six months training as pit crew members at Rev Racing, with hopes of one day pitting for a national series team.
Â
Last year, former Alcorn softball student-athlete Breanna O'Leary made history as part of the first-ever two-female pit crew team at a NASCAR Cup Series event. O'Leary and Brehanna Daniels (Norfolk State) changed tires during the Coke Zero Sugar 400 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race on July 7, 2018 at Daytona International Speedway.
Â
O'Leary and Daniels also made history as the first women to pit a car in the prestigious season-opening Daytona 500 this year.
