CLINTON, Miss.
 - The Alcorn State University cross country teams had a solid showing to begin the season on Friday evening at the Mississippi College Opener at Choctaw Trails.

The men started the campaign by running a 5K while the women participated in the 4K.

"Great effort, I think some people realized today that they can be better than they thought they were," said head coach Fermon Tate.

Leading the way for the Lady Braves and the top finisher among all Alcorn runners, senior Shaquanda Hill recorded a time of 18:57.99. Sophomore Makayla Gates was not too far behind at 19:17.46 and junior Hali Jones placed in the top-three on the team as she clocked in at 20:19.64. Senior Tymesha Nabors (21:10.94), sophomore Kiana Allen (21:14.49) and freshman Char'davia Anderson (22:03.78) rounded out the participants.

The women placed eighth with 190 points and averaged a 20:12.03 time as a group.

For the Braves, junior Peterson Saint-Cyrin fronted the pack for the purple and gold, posting a 19:24.52 time. Junior Josias Jean (20:20.63) and senior Tyreq Miles (20:44.64) made up the Alcorn men's top-three. Sophomores Javon Rutledge (23:40.77), Elliot Pak (23:46.16) and Ashton DeFreeze (27:11.46) all ran admirably as well.

The men finished ninth with a total of 249 points with a collective average time of 21:35.35.

Both squads will head south to West Feliciana, Louisiana next Saturday as they participate in the Southern Invitational at 7:30 a.m.
