Wesley Stephens Joins Track & Field, Cross Country Coaching Staffs

LORMAN, Miss. – Wesley Stephens has been hired as Assistant Coach for both the men's and women's cross country and track & field programs, announced by head coach Fermon Tate.

Stephens arrives at Alcorn after serving as a graduate assistant coach with the cross country/track and field programs at VCU in 2018-19.

"I'm excited to join the Alcorn athletic department," Stephens said. "I'm looking forward to working with Coach Tate in building the cross country and track programs into a conference contender."

Stephens helped the Rams capture the 2019 Atlantic-10 Conference Indoor Championship, while watching five separate athletes be named Atlantic-10 Champions in their events. Stephens also oversaw seven A-10 Runner-Ups and four A-10 Bronze Medalists during his tenure.

"Coach Stephens came highly recommended to a young, talented program," said Tate. "He will be truly welcomed."

Prior to entering the collegiate coaching ranks, Stephens was the head track and cross country coach at Western High School, and the head track coach at Desert Pines High School, both located in Las Vegas, Nevada. In his four years combined, he won a boys D-1A Nevada State Team Championship, coached nine regional champions, had six individual Nevada State Champions and seven New Balance national qualifiers.

Stephens has experience as a student-athlete as well, specializing in the decathlon and javelin as an undergrad at Howard University. He currently holds Howard's school record in the decathlon with 5,560 points, made three All-MEAC teams in the decathlon and was a five-time MEAC Qualifier in the decathlon, heptathlon and javelin.

Stephens was born in Alexandria, Virginia. He earned his bachelor's degree in journalism at Howard and his master's degree in Sport Leadership from VCU.
