LORMAN, Miss. – The Southwestern Athletic Conference announced its 2019 All-Academic Team, and 87 women and 72 men from Alcorn State University were recognized.

Of the 10 schools in the league, Alcorn earned the second-most amount of student-athletes overall with 159.

"This is one of the top conference awards after each season. It honors student-athletes who excel both in the classroom and in their sport.  We are very proud of our student-athletes' academic achievement. Through our 4 for 40 initiative, we look to continue to build upon our athletic and academic success each year.  These recipients represent the true meaning of being an Alcorn student-athlete," said Cyrus Russ, assistant vice president for athletic compliance and academic services.

The 2019 team was based off the fall 2018 and spring 2019 semesters. The team honors student-athletes, including freshman to seniors, with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better.

The announcement capped off a big 2018-19 academic year for Alcorn. The Braves had four teams (men's cross country, men's track & field, women's golf, women's tennis) earn a perfect 1,000 APR, which were the most in the SWAC and the most in Division I HBCU's. Alcorn awarded 65 degrees from 15 different sports, and 55 student-athletes earned 4.0 semester GPA's.

Whether we look at GPA's, APR scores, team cumulative averages or individual performances, our student-athletes have consistently been one of the best. I continue to commend our student-athletes, coaches and academic staff on the outstanding work they've done," said director of athletics
