Alcorn Competes Well In Sugar Bowl Meet

NEW ORLEANS, La.
 - The Alcorn State University cross country teams were led by sophomore Makayla Gates for the second straight week while junior Peterson Saint-Cyrin has fronted the men in all three regular season meets so far.

"Everyone is starting to roll into shape," said head coach Fermon Tate. "We had numerous personal records on both sides today."

Both the Braves and Lady Braves participated in a 5K race.

Makayla Gates posted the Lady Braves' lowest time in her second straight competition, placing 27th with a 22:49.60 time. Junior Hali Jones was not far behind at 24:13.90 and senior Tymesha Nabors placed third on the team at a 25:26.80 clip. Sophomore Kiana Allen (25:40.10) and freshman Char'davia Anderson (26:15.00) also ran in the event.

The women placed seventh with 172 points and averaged a time of 24:54 collectively while ranking ahead of the Mississippi University for Women.

In regard to the Braves runners, Peterson Saint-Cyrin continued his streak of leading the club in each meet, running a 18:12.40 to finish in 29th place. Senior Tyreq Miles was second on the Braves with a 18:21.30 mark and in his first race of the season, redshirt junior Titus Kibii was third for Alcorn at 19:03.40. The other competitors for the men's side consisted of junior Josias Jean (20:06.10), sophomore Elliot Pak (20:46.90), sophomore Javon Rutledge (21:08.20) and sophomore Ashton DeFreeze (25:24.80).

The men finished seventh with a total of 191 points, placing ahead of Mississippi University for Women and Tougaloo at an average time of 19:18.

Both squads will travel to Lake Charles, Louisiana in two weeks to take part in the McNeese Cowboy Stampede at 8:30 a.m.
