WEST FELICIANA, La. - The Alcorn State University cross country teams competed admirably early Sunday morning as they participated in the Southern Invitational at West Feliciana Parish Park.
"Overall great effort," said head coach Fermon Tate. "Gates and Peterson raced well and led their respective teams on the course."
The men ran the 6K while the women raced in the 5K.
Sophomore Makayla Gates fronted the pack for the Lady Braves, producing a top-15 finish in 22:52.09. Junior Hali Jones was second on the squad, coming in at 25:06.39 while sophomore Kiana Allen placed third among the purple and gold with a 27:10.21. Rounding out the runners were senior Tymesha Nabors (28:36.02) and freshman Char'davia Anderson (28:36.39).
The women placed fifth with 111 points and averaged a 26:28 time as a unit.
On the Braves side, reigning SWAC Runner of the Week Peterson Saint-Cyrin once again posted the lowest time at 23:30.94. Senior Tyreq Miles (24:28.10) and junior Josias Jean (26:35.07) were also among the Braves' top-three. Sophomores Javon Rutledge (28:14.84) and Ashton DeFreeze (33:31.40) capped off the meet for Alcorn.
The men finished fourth with a total of 109 points while besting Louisiana College at an average time of 27:16.
The men and women's teams will both travel to City Park in New Orleans on Saturday to take part in the Allstate Sugar Bowl X Country Festival at 7:45 a.m. hosted by the Loyola University New Orleans.
